Media Release
Issued in the City of Monrovia March 2, 2009-**Modified Version**

The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) categorically condemns the current wave of killings in Bong County and calls on the Liberian government and UNMIL to remain alert on the issues of crimes and gruesome murder of innocent Liberians by some vicious men, who still believe that barbarism should be the order of the day. FLY also condemns the violent protest led by the youth of Bong County that led to the destruction of properties and the disruption of normal activities in the county. The youth must graduate from violent approaches in seeking redress and or justice at times, especially when circumstances of such arise.

Furthermore, FLY wants the government of Liberia and UNMIL to respond to issues that have the propensity to erupt conflict than allowing them to degenerate into chaos and or violence before reacting. This sends a wrong signal that Government’s attention is drawn to a particular cause when there are violent approaches in bringing the culprits to justice or finding solutions to the problem.

FLY in a joint press statement with its Bong Youth Secretariat issued recently, signaled to the Liberian government and people that there was a growing wave of emergency in Bong County when Momo Sassy, a youth, was murdered by some unidentified men. From that period up to present, there has been no serious concern raised about the mysterious killing of young people in that part of the Country until recently when another youth; Amar Kerwu was killed bringing the total number of murder of youth in Bong County to four. The recent murder of Amar kerwu few days ago stirred up violence that led to the Superintendent-imposing curfew in the County after the youth protest left several properties destroyed. FLY’s Coordinator in Bong County; Daniel Weetor named Mohammad Koshar and Momo Sassy as other youth killed in less than a year.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Liberian Youth is calling for a probe into the killing of the four sons of Bong County and at the same time calling for measures that will prevent the reoccurrences.

The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) is the umbrella organization of all youth and student groups in Liberia , established May 31, 1974 and enacted into Law through an act of the National Legislature on September 20, 1978.

Press Statement
Issued in the City of Monrovia February 26, 2009

Furthermore, the verification and follow-up exercises will be followed by a two day consultation meeting, which will bring together all mapped-up youth organizations within Montserrado County. The purpose of the youth consultative meeting is to train youth leaders in various areas of professionalism including advocacy, resource mobilization, and leadership. The establishment of the Montserrado County Youth Secretariat through a democratic and transparent process will climax the youth consultative meeting. Delegates from mapped-up youth organizations within Montserrado County will elect three persons; Coordinator, Program and, Finance Assistants, to head the secretariat. In addition, there will be five other persons appointed by the elected officials to serve as the secretariat staff.

Moreover, the Federation of Liberian Youth notes that youth organizations in Montserrado County that deliberately refused to form part of the mapping-up exercise, which lasted over three months, will not participate in the setting-up of the Montserrado County Youth Secretariat. FLY further lamented that the duration of the mapping-up exercise is three months for each County but lasted for five months in Montserrado County due to what it refers to as lack of interest on the part of some youth organizations in Montserrado County. The Christian Children Fund (CCF) is sponsoring the Mapping-up exercise for the setting up of the Montserrado CountyYouth Secretariat.

Meanwhile, FLY wishes to announce to the people of Liberia and its sponsors that the secretariat establishments for Grand Bassa, Cape Mount, Margibi, Bong, Sinoe, and Gbarpolu Counties are complete and, are now functional. FLY’s County Youth Secretariats are meant to regulate and or coordinate youth activities at Counties levels. Yet, all FLY’s County youth secretariats remained under the supervision of the National Secretariat with Headquarters in Monrovia.

The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) is the umbrella organization of all youth and student groups in Liberia, established May 31, 1974 and enacted into Law through an act of the National Legislature on September 20, 1978.
