along with the Deputy Secretary for Program, Mr. T. Maxwell Grisgby, who

at the Roberts International Airport on Monday, June 7, 2010. The
Federation of Liberian Youth Delegation traveled to Sweden to attend the 5th Global YES Summit – Rework the World in Sweden from
June 1-6, 2010.
Rework the World is a joint

countries, and Tällberg Foundation, with its high-level global network of
decision makers. The vision of this summit is to have in place the
relations and plan to engage two million young people in meaningful work
through sustainable green employment opportunities by 2012.

Government officials, among others attended the Summit.
During the Summit, FLY delegate,
headed by President Zayzay submitted to the plenary of the summit on behalf
of the young people of Liberia developmental initiatives that included
construction of a Modern Resource Center, Sexual Reproductive Project,
among others. Also the Federation’s delegation met with the Swedish Youth
Council and agreed “mutually” on issues of partnership that will benefit
the young people of Liberia
in terms of capacity building, leadership training, entrepreneurship, youth
participation, employment opportunities, etc.
The proposal was accepted
pending implementation from the donors that promised support FLY in the
implementation of these initiatives.
In other development, the
Federation of Liberian Youth on Thursday, June 10, 2010 met with the
delegation of youth leaders from the Sierra Leonean YMCA, who are guests of
the Liberian YMCA. The Sierra Leoneans had come under a joint project
sponsored by the European Commission for the Mano River Countries.
The meeting was well attended
by the Executives and staff of the Federation of Liberian Youth and all the
guests of the Sierra Leonean YMCA and their hosts the Liberian YMCA.
During the meeting, FLY
President Zayzay narrated to the Sierra Leoneans the history of the
Federation and the leadership plan of action and the status of the National
Youth Policy. For their part, the Sierra Leoneans explained about their
country’s youth commission, the National Youth Commission of Sierra Leone,
and how they succeeded in enacting it into law. Their spokesman advised the
youth of Liberia
to follow the same trend of the Youths of Sierra Leone.
Fly boosts
school-to-work campaign
of re-orienting them towards
entrepreneurship and new employment generation culture as a new impetus towards
the reduction of unemployment among Liberian Youths.
In pursuant of this, and in support of the
newly introduced School To Work project, FLY has commenced a process of
making Liberian youths to have access to various helpful literature, books
and video materials that will enlighten them on various approaches to
employment and income generation, while laying a foundation for a new labor
culture of improved personal effectiveness and efficiency among Liberian
Youths at work.
As a first step on this agenda, FLY
plans to put copies of the book “From School To Work” in the libraries of
all youth associations and high schools in Liberia.
The Federation stated in a release
sent to our Youth Desk that this program is aimed at ensuring that all
youth associations and high schools across Liberia have copies of this
book in their libraries. “This is to guarantee an immediate access of
teachers and students to this book, thereby creating an opportunity for all
high school students in Liberia
to be part of, and benefit from this new employment, thinking initiative,”
the release said.
According to FLY president
Augustus M. Zayzay, Jnr., the book is a tool that will begin to change the
mindset of Liberian youths concerning jobs and employment, enlightening
them on how to create a space for themselves in the present world of work,
and how each graduate, undergraduate or high school student can begin to
plan for his or her employment future with adequate information on the what
and where of the contemporary world of work.
The book-“From School To Work” was
launched in Liberia on Thursday 28th January, 2010 in collaboration with
FLY and with the support of UNMIL and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and
was recently presented to some selected high school in Monrovia through the
High School Job inspiration program sponsored by the International Labor
Organization in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor.
