According to the President of the Federation of Liberian Youth, Mr. Augustus M. Zayzay, Jr. young people are cardinal to the electoral processes of Liberia which begin with the voter registration that started Monday, January 10, 2011 across the country. We are encouraging fellow young people to take advantage of this voter registration period that run from January 10-February 6, 2011 to obtain their voter registration card which will enable them exercise their constitutional and civic duties in the entire electoral processes of 2011 including the upcoming referendum. This same voter registration card is expected to be used in the 2014 senatorial election.
The VOTE YOUR FUTURE 2011 CAMPAIGN, a coalition of civil society organizations comprising mainly of youth and student organizations is a non political and non-for-profit movement that seeks to encourage over 700,000 young Liberian between the ages of 18-35 to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise (January 10-February 6, 2011) to enable them participate in the general and presidential elections slated for October 2011 and the referendum slated for August 2011. This broad based effort which also buttresses the effort of the National Elections Commission targets the six most populated counties of Liberia to include Montserrado, Nimba, Margibi, Bong, Grand Bassa and Lofa.
January 10, 2011 was unanimously selected by member organizations as the date for the official launching of the VOTE YOUR FUTURE 2011 CAMPAIGN throughout the six identified counties in Liberia. The VOTE YOUR FUTURE 2011 CAMPAIGN was launched simultaneously in the six counties.
With this mass rally and expression by young people, it appears that the voting history of young people is about to change. It will no longer be a concern of whether or not they going to cast their ballot. Monday’s rally answered that question but what remains is for whom will they cast those most coveted ballots?
However it seems all this perception might have changed on Monday when thousands of young Liberian took to the streets of Monrovia and other parts of the country, particularly in Grand Bassa, Margibi, Nimba, Bong, and Lofa Counties, in celebratory mood to make a statement that no more would they stay behind or be left out.
In a non partisan campaign parade characterized by civility, the youth representing different age groups amassed, fully clad in white T-shirts, matched from the Monrovia City Hall to Broad Street and to Ashmun Street where an official launching program of the VOTE YOUR FUTURE 2011 CAMPAIGN was held.
Unlike other general and presidential elections in Liberia, it is most likely that the 2011 elections may have an overwhelming turnout of young people due to the efforts of VOTE YOUR Future 2011 CAMPAIGN and other institutions that are strongly educating the significance of their vote. This youth driven voter’s registration sensitization campaign led by the Vote YOUR FUTURE 2011 CAMPAIGN team is not only first of its kind in Liberia but one that is so remarkable and widely talked about. The Monrovia launch displayed youth and students from every sector irrespective of political or religious persuasions.
VOTE YOUR FUTURE 2011 CAMPAIGN is a multi-stakeholders campaign organized to encourage young voters from ages 18-35 to register to vote in the 2011 general and presidential elections, the upcoming referendum and the 2014 senatorial election. Because young people voters represent an estimated 59% of eligible voters (as per the 2008 census), the future of Liberia rests in their hands but in order to decide the future of Liberia, they must be registered to vote. The goal of the campaign is to have 700,000 young voters registered between January 10, -February 6, 2011.
The vote Your Future campaign 2011 campaign is made of influential youth groups and individuals from across a broad spectrum of civil society. The group includes Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), National Elections Commission (NEC), Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Youth Action International (YAI), Liberia National Youth Congress (LNYC), Tackling Poverty Together (TPT), Motorcycle Union, Musician Union, National Polit Bureau, National Legislature, Liberia Rising 2030, Liberia Football Federation, and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) among several others.
